IN THIS LESSON

Opening

As a practitioner, your empathy is one of your strengths.

It allows connection.
It builds trust.
It creates safety.

And yet, empathy without awareness can become absorption.

This module is not about becoming distant.
It is about remaining steady.

Detached compassion is not coldness.
It is caring deeply while holding lightly.

Empathy & Compassion

Empathy feels with another.

Compassion responds with care.

When empathy turns into merging, you may notice:

  • Carrying a client’s emotions long after a session.

  • Feeling responsible for resolving their suffering.

  • Emotional heaviness that lingers.

  • Difficulty separating your story from theirs.

This is not a flaw.

It is a signal to recalibrate.

Compassion allows warmth and presence without absorbing the weight.

You can care deeply.
You do not have to carry indefinitely.

Noticing Activation

During a session, your body will often tell you first.

You might notice:

  • Tightness in your chest.

  • Shallow breathing.

  • A surge of urgency.

  • A desire to rescue or fix quickly.

Pause internally.

One slow breath.

Soften your shoulders.

Widen your awareness slightly beyond the story being shared.

You are allowed to remain grounded while listening.

The Gentle Boundary

At the close of a session, even silently, say:

What was shared is honored.
What is not mine to carry, I release.

You do not need ritual complexity.

You need consistency.

Recalibration is a good habit.

Reflection

Consider:

  • When do I feel most merged with others?

  • What sensations tell me I am absorbing rather than holding?

  • What helps me return to center?

There is no judgment in these questions.

Only awareness.

Closing

Steady presence protects both you and the person you serve.

Holding lightly allows your light to endure.
